Why we do Mangroves Cleanup ?

underline
Mangroves have been threatened by deforestation for decades, as agriculture and aquaculture, urban development and harvesting have caused the loss of more than a quarter of mangrove forests in the past 50 years. 62% of the lost area was due to human causes, mainly farming and aquaculture. Mangroves play important roles in preventing sea erosion and seawater intrusion, and which softens the impact of tsunami. They are also known as blue carbon sinks because they can transfer and store carbon in their sediments and within plant parts at rates far greater than those of terrestrial forests. Local action, such as a routine mangrove clean up is urgently needed to prevent plastic destroying mangrove forest and its ecosystem.Losses of mangroves also release large amounts of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, arising from destruction of their biomass and the release of the large carbon stocks held in their soils. This affects all of us on the planet as it contributes to global warming, further accelerating global climatic change.

What do we do ?

underline
We started mangroves Cleanup Drive along with Child Help Foundation, Maharashtra Forest Department, Mangroves Foundation & Mira Bhayandar Municipal Corporation on July 2021. We have obtained many benefits from planting/growing Mangroves in our city. We undertook the task of informing the people about the benefits and importance of the Mangroves bordering the sea. Many college and school students, as well as locals from the city, took part in the campaign. From last 12 months, we started mangroves forest cleaning campaign at Bhayander East and West and have managed to remove more than 100 tons of garbage from this place. This campaign will continue with great success. The essential information and the importance of the mangroves cleanup was also explained to the volunteers. Along with those clean ups we also make mangroves plastic free which helps to hold on with soil and garbage from the sea to flow outside and also we are trying to save more mangroves. "If there were no mangrove forests, then the sea will have no meaning. It is like having a tree without roots, because mangroves are the roots of the sea." Mangroves provide pivotal support to commercial fisheries acting as nursery, breeding, spawning and hatching habitats for offshore fisheries and exporting organic matter to the marine environment, producing nutrients for fauna in both the mangroves themselves and in adjacent marine and estuarine ecosystems.

What we want to do / Future planning

underline
It is very important to protect the Mangrove forest and to spread the message to the people how important Mangrove forest is for each of us. It is necessary to spread awareness among the locals by implementing Mangroves cleaning campaign. Cleaning of Mangrove forest as well as re-planting of Mangrove forest with the help of locals & administration in the place from which Mangrove forest has been destroyed. To inform every citizen about the importance of Mangrove forest for present and future in terms of environment and society.
